State Climatologist

Curriculum Vita: | 1. short | 2. full |
Research Interests:

I am an earth scientist, more specifically a physical geographer and climatologist.  My research interests run the spatial gamut from global to local, with an underlying theme being the development of a better understanding of the climate system.  The majority of my published research has focused on hemispheric and regional snow cover dynamics and interactions of snow cover with other climate elements.  This includes maintaining an internationally-recognized database of Northern Hemisphere snow extent throughout the satellite era http://snowcover.org.  This information is used in our Global Snow Lab's research endeavors, efforts of others, and in our contributions to national and international climate assessments.

As the New Jersey State Climatologist, I conduct research of an applied nature that focuses on the diverse weather and climate of the Garden State.  This includes topics such as climate change, drought, flooding, and issues involving agriculture, transportation, public safety and commerce http://njclimate.org.  The Office of the NJ State Climatologist also operates one of the most spatially dense observing networks in the nation.  The NJ Weather and Climate Network http://njwx.org provides timely information to decision makers, the research community, and the general public.

Finally, I have served on a number of national committees and occasionally publish on issues related to my interest in the collection and archiving of accurate climatic data.

My research focuses on wildlife conservation in forests that lie outside Protected Areas. Working in Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh (India), I plan to explore the social, ecological and political factors that converge to conserve wildlife in forests that have historically played a role in connecting two distinct biogeographic regions, the Eastern and Western Ghats. My study area is a part of the Eastern Ghats and comprises of scrub and dry deciduous forests rich in both flora and fauna. There are approximately 1300 species of plants with many endemics, over 50 species of mammals and over 1000 bird species.

Welcome to Geography

Geography majors receive a liberal arts education that is an appropriate base for further specialized training in academic disciplines which address environmental and international issues or in related professional fields such as planning and public policy, law, and environmental management. Students are also offered courses in which they learn specific technical skills in spatial data analysis, cartographic design, remote sensing, and geographic information systems that are suitable for direct entry employment positions. The Geography Graduate Program encourages work on a wide range of research specialties and fosters strong interdisciplinary ties. The program offers the following degree options: Master of Arts (MA), Master of Science (MS), and the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD).

        • Professor Kevin St. Martin awarded two NSF grants.
        • Professor Asher Ghertner formally reappointed in SAS, and also wins a 2014 SAS Teaching Award.
        • Grad student Joshua Randall wins MS student paper award.
        • Grad student Hudson McFann awarded a fellowhsip.
        • Professor Robin Leichenko promoted to Full Professor.
