Another Year Comes To A Close
This past year brought a number of exciting events, changes and opportunities to the Department of Geography at Rutgers. We were fortunate to hire two outstanding, new faculty members. Kevin St. Martin (Ph.D-Clark 1999) and Jasbir Puar (Ph.D-Berkeley 1999). Kevin is currently holding a NOAA Fellowship at Woods Hole. .

Society of Women Geographers Celebration
SWG Panel

(Christine Drake, Maria Lambasa, Lucy Liu, Susan Millar spoke during a panel discussion honoring the SWG)
This is a personal reflection of how a place and time contributed to Maria Lambasa's career as a professional geographer. She was born in Poland shortly before WW II and her first memory as a child was that of hearing her mother saying: "keep your eyes closed because you are under the rubble".

American West Study Tour
Chuck Colvard and John Hasse are reprising last summer's Geography of Public Lands in the American West study tour. Last year's class was a big success and this year's trip promises to be another nonstop roller coaster of knowledge. The course begins in late May with an examination of the American Environmental Movement. A week later, we fly west to Salt Lake City where we begin a 4-week loop of national parks, national forests, and other public lands west of the 109th meridian.

News from the Graduate Program
Students are graduating at a record pace. By this year's Commencement, six Ph.D.s (James DeFillipis, Richard Hunter, Juliana Maantay, Rupal Oza, Lisa Vandemark, Doracie Zoleta-Nantes) and six Masters students (Sandra Baptista, Jeremy Colangelo-Bryan, Christy Henges, Mark Pendras, Verdie Robinson, Bansuri Taneja) will have graduated during 1999-2000. As we go to press it is possible that these totals will increase because five more prospective Ph.Ds (Jason Hackworth, Salvatore Engel-Dimauro, Jim Kendra, Ted Kilian, Karen Nichols) and one Masters student (Ken Corti) have scheduled upcoming defenses or are otherwise in the final stages of wrapping up theses. We wish all of these accomplished young scholars and professionals good fortune and remind them to keep us informed of their future whereabouts.

High professional visibility
Noriko IshiyamaToday's graduate students are among the most professionally active in the program's history. Seventeen continuing students and four recent Ph.D. graduates (Craghan, DeFilippis, Oza, Zoleta-Nantes) contributed a total of 22 papers to the 96th Annual Meeting of the Association of American Geographers which was held at Pittsburgh, PA from April 4-8. This is a remarkably high level of participation for a program which enrolls approximately sixty students. Special commendation is due to Noriko Ishiyama whose paper on hazardous waste siting and native American reservations won two awards from AAG Specialty Groups. Michael Craghan was elected to the board of directors of the Coastal and Marine AAG Specialty Group. Plaudits too to Bob Donovan, a member of the second place Geography Bowl Team at Pittsburgh.

The Entering Class of 2000
Thanks to diligent work by this year's new students, incoming members of next year's graduate class are already becoming acquainted with the banks of the Raritan. Kate Albert sent welcoming letters to all new program admits and the redoubtable duo of Tenley Conway and Wendy Mitteager are planning a field weekend for new students that includes Stokes State Forest, Liberty State Park, Island Beach State Park, the fabled Cowtown Rodeo and (with help from John Hasse) a Pinelands canoe trip. In other words a selection of experiences that is guaranteed to counter some of the state's less salubrious stereotypes. These are wonderful innovations that we hope to make regular features of the program.
