American West Study Tour
Chuck Colvard and John Hasse are reprising last summer's Geography of Public Lands in the American West study tour. Last year's class was a big success and this year's trip promises to be another nonstop roller coaster of knowledge. Thecourse begins in late May with an examination of the American Environmental Movement. A week later, we fly west to Salt Lake City where we begin a 4-week loop of national parks, national forests, and other public lands west of the 109th meridian. On the trip, students will talk with local experts on the physical geography and human history of these lands. Current management issues confronting planners and resource managers are also a main focus of the course.
Just as last year, students will be responsible for presentations and final projects providing an in-depth look at one of the stops on the itinerary. However, this year students will be posting web pages from the field summarizing their projects. There will be a new, more southerly route this year. This year's tentative itinerary includes these National Parks: Arches, Crater Lake, Death Valley, Glacier, Grand Canyon, Mt Rainier, Yellowstone, Yosemite and Zion.
In addition, the group will be stopping for breaks (and hot showers) in Las Vegas, San Francisco, and Seattle.
You can view both this year's progress (with almost live pictures coming in June) and photos from last year's trip, on the class web page at:
