Welcome
Welcome to the Fall edition of the Geography Department newsletter. We are in the midst of a busy semester, as I'm sure this fall is for all of you. Our undergraduate course enrollment is high and new majors are signing on every week. We have a dozen excellent new graduate students, and are proud to have 18 nations represented within our graduate ranks. As you will read later in this newsletter, our faculty and staff are as active as ever.
I am back in the Chair's helm after a productive sabbatical. Many thanks to Joanna for a superlative job of chairing last year, including leading the successful 50th anniversary celebrations. We wish her the best as she takes a well deserved sabbatical. Welcome back to Peter after his spring sabbatical, and to Roger and Bria after they enjoyed a productive year from their temporary home base in England. Finally, a warm welcome to Jasbir Puar, as she joins our department as an assistant professor on a shared line with Women's Studies.
There is much to look forward to as this academic year progresses. Later this month, Geography Awareness Week will include several activities for students, faculty, staff, alumni and others. Mark Pendras, a graduate student in the department, has organized an exciting colloquium schedule. There is also the late-winter AAG meeting, which will include several pre-meeting symposia co-sponsored by our department. Finally, we look forward to Kevin St. Martin joining us this spring as an assistant professor on a shared line with the Center for Urban Policy Research.
Read on, and learn more about the diverse activities of our faculty, students and staff. And please don't be shy about letting us know of your recent interests and accomplishments. We'll be preparing the spring issue of this newsletter before you know it.
