Environmental Justice as a Concern for Climate Change

Dr. Danielle Purifoy is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Geography at UNC-Chapel Hill. Her current research traces the roots of contemporary environmental conditions in the U.S. South, specifically in black towns dating back to the post-Bellum era. She has also written about the legal dimensions of environmental justice and equity in food systems.

Dr. Adelle Thomas is a Senior Caribbean Research Associate for the IMPACT project and part of the Science team. Her particular focus is on aspects of social vulnerability, adaptation strategies and loss and damage. As a human-environment geographer, she is interested in the particular vulnerabilities and adaptation potentials for small island developing states. Adelle has worked for several years on intersections between climate change adaptation, environmental protection and development.

Dr. Pavithra Vasudevan is an Assistant Professor at the University of Texas at Austin in the Department of African & African Diaspora Studies and the Center for Women’s & Gender Studies. Her scholarship and teaching are concerned with how racialized peoples and landscapes are devalued in capitalism and the possibilities for abolition through collective struggle. Her work addresses how race and waste are interwoven in contemporary racial capitalism and capitalist entanglements with the state and science.
