"Feminisms Brexiteers? Cisness And/As Nativism"

In this lecture on reproductive freedom and revolutionary feminist horizons, Dr. Sophie Lewis will argue for understanding anti-trans, so-called TERF or, in its own preferred terms, gender-critical feminism as a sexual nationalism: a politics built on the redemptive promise of a strong border. Rather than dismiss the self-described feminists of the anti-gender movement as non-feminists, Lewis will build on the analysis in her new book Enemy Feminisms: TERFs, Policewomen, and Girlbosses Against Liberation by articulating the unavoidability of feminist enmity, and the necessity of inter- and anti-nationalism for the movement of (quoting Emma Heaney) feminism against cisness that will be required to defeat contemporary fascism.
Dr. Lewis is the author of Full Surrogacy Now, Abolish the Family, and Enemy Feminisms. Her fourth book, The Liberation of Children, is forthcoming from Penguin in 2027. She lives in Philadelphia and teaches short courses on critical theory online for the Brooklyn Institute for Social Research. Previously, Dr Lewis studied English Literature (BA) and Nature, Society and Environmental Policy (MSc) at Oxford University, followed by an MA Politics at the New School for Social Research and a PhD in Geography at the University of Manchester.
