On February 27th and 28th, 2025 we celebrated how, for seventy-five years, the Department of Geography has fostered extraordinary scholarship, student engagement, and a supportive and convivial academic community.

Ruthie Gilmore

Our celebration began on Thursday evening, February 27th with the Inaugural John E. Brush Lecture. Our keynote speaker was  Dr. Ruth Wilson Gilmore, who received her PhD from Rutgers and whose extraordinary career as a scholar of racial capitalism and abolition geographies, as well as an organizer and advocate of social justice has been widely recognized in academia (e.g. member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences) and beyond (e.g. New York Times, New Haven Mural Project).

Dr. Wilson Gilmore's keynote presentation was immediately followed by an Alumni Reception where old and new friends enjoyed good  food, refreshments, and fellowship.

On Friday the 28th, we hosted an "open house" in the Department of Geography. Participants viewed exhibitions and heard presentations of current research by students and faculty, toured the Rutgers Ecological Preserve, and informally shared stories and hopes for the future of the department at our guest luncheon.
